Courses & Social Hours

wyethBolton Veterinary Hospital’s training department offers social hours, structured training courses, and private lessons.

Each member of our training staff is highly educated and experienced in teaching basic obedience skills, resolving common household problems and much more. We use only the most up-to-date positive reinforcement techniques available to help you and your pet achieve success and build a strong bond.

Please note: Our courses are taught using the most up-to-date, scientifically grounded training methods. Many times this involves the use of a behavior marker (e.g. a clicker or a bingo word such as “Yes!”)


Puppy Happy Hour

  • Strictly a social, no training instruction.
  • 45 minutes of supervised off-leash play.
  • Dogs must be under 6 months of age (except with trainer permission)
  • Supervised by a trainer; occasionally moderated by an adult dog that has displayed exceptional canine communication skills and excellent temperament.
  • Drop-in basis
  • 1 session = $8
  • Proof of vaccination required


Puppy Kindergarten

  • For puppies age 8-26 weeks (or trainer approval)
  • First class is orientation; Puppies do not attend the orientation class
  • 15-20 minutes of each class devoted to off leash socialization
  • House training, teething, other puppy-rearing topics addressed
  • Cues/skills addressed: sit, down, come, leash walking and polite greetings
  • 7 weeks long, meets for one hour on same day of each week.
  • Tuition = $185
  • Maximum 8 dogs per class


Family Dog Obedience

  • For dogs age 5 months or older (your dog is never too old to train!), graduates of Puppy Kindergarten, or trainer approval
  • First class is orientation; dogs do not attend the orientation class
  • Cues/skills addressed: sit, down, stay, leave it, wait (e.g. at door/food bowl), come, leash walking, polite greetings, settle (go to place)
  • Skills are taught on leash
  • AKC Canine Good Citizen awarded upon request (testing required)
  • 7 weeks long, meets for one hour on same day each week.
  • Tuition = $185
  • Maximum 8 dogs per class


Let’s Get Focused

  • This class is for dogs 9 months or older who have some basic obedience skills.
  • Strengthens leadership skills
  • Teaches dog stronger focus skills
  • Improves impulse control, even with distractions
  • Teaches polite waiting while allowing distractions to pass
  • Class is taught on and off leash
  • Fun and games too!
  • Class is six weeks long (same day each week)
  • Tuition = $165
  • Maximum 6 dogs per class


Family Dog Obedience II

  • Cues/skills addressed: refining of skills covered in Family Dog Obedience I with higher levels of distraction, duration and distance; new skills: front, finish, stand, targeting
  • Skills are taught on and off leash
  • AKC Canine Good Citizen awarded upon request (testing required)
  • Must have completed Family Dog Obedience I (or equivalent), or have trainer permission
  • 7 weeks long, meets for one hour on the same day each week
  • Tuition = $185
  • Maximum 6 dogs per class


Therapy Dog Handler Course

  • We offer an extensive 12 week Therapy Dog training program, focusing on all aspects of therapy dog work, including: working around medical equipment, various levels of patient/client interactions, clinical practical visits (usually to a nursing home/rehab facility), helping you become a team working together with your dog (the best part!).
  • The course also focuses on the various elements of the Therapy Dog Certification Exam. At the end of the course, participants may take the Therapy Dog Certification Exam of The Bright & Beautiful Therapy Dogs, Inc. which is independently administered.
  • Once qualified to become members of Healers with Halos Therapy Dogs, a chapter The Bright and Beautiful Therapy Dogs, Inc., certified dogs will receive many benefits including primary accident and liability insurance within the US, and therapy dog equipment. Healers with Halos is proudly sponsored in part by Bolton Veterinary Hospital.
  • Therapy Dog courses are usually offered at least once per year.
  • Completion of the course does not guarantee passing the test.
  • Requirements:
  • Dog must be at least 18 months of age
  • Both handler and dog must have completed a formal Basic Obedience/Family Dog course, taught using Positive Reinforcement methods
  • Completed an interview with the course instructor
  • Tuition = $300 (includes certification test fee)

COME FIDO, COME! (Recall class)

  • For dogs 6 months or older (your dog is never too old too train)
  • DOGS ATTEND FIRST CLASS (no orientation)
  • Teach your dog to come when you call them – the first time!!
  • No prior training is required
  • 4 weeks long, meets for one hour on same day each week
  • Tuition = $120
