Courses & Social Hours

wyethBolton Veterinary Hospital’s training department offers social hours, structured training courses, and individualized behavior consultations.

Each member of our training staff is highly educated and experienced in teaching basic obedience skills, resolving common household problems and much more. We use only the most up-to-date positive reinforcement techniques available to help you and your pet achieve success and build a strong bond.

Please note: Our courses are taught using the most up-to-date, scientifically grounded training methods. Many times this involves the use of a behavior marker (e.g. a clicker or a bingo word such as “Yes!”)

 

Toy Breed Social

  • Strictly a social for dog-friendly dogs. No training instruction.
  • 45-60 minutes of supervised off-leash play
  • Dogs MUST be under 20 lbs, spayed/neutered, over 6 months of age (except with trainer permission)
  • Drop-in basis
  • 1 session = $8
  • 4 sessions = $30
  • 10 sessions = $60
  • Proof of vaccination required

 

Puppy Happy Hour

  • Strictly a social, no training instruction.
  • 45-60 minutes of supervised off-leash play.
  • Dogs must be under 9 months of age (except with trainer permission)
  • Supervised by a trainer; occasionally moderated by an adult dog that has displayed exceptional canine communication skills and excellent temperament.
  • Drop-in basis
  • 1 session = $8
  • 4 sessions = $30
  • 8 sessions = $60
  • Proof of vaccination required

 

Puppy Kindergarten

  • For puppies age 8-26 weeks (or trainer approval)
  • First class is orientation; Puppies do not attend the orientation class
  • 15-20 minutes of each class devoted to off leash socialization
  • House training, teething, other puppy-rearing topics addressed
  • Cues/skills addressed: sit, down, come, leash walking and polite greetings
  • AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy awarded upon request
  • 7 weeks long, meets for one hour on same day of each week.
  • Tuition = $185

 

Family Dog Obedience

  • For dogs age 5 months or older (your dog is never too old to train!), graduates of Puppy Kindergarten, or trainer approval
  • First class is orientation; Dogs do not attend the orientation class
  • Cues/skills addressed: sit, down, stay, leave it, wait (e.g. at door/food bowl), come, leash walking, polite greetings, settle (go to place)
  • Skills are taught on leash
  • APDT B.A. for Dogs or AKC Canine Good Citizen awarded upon request (testing required)
  • 7 weeks long, meets for one hour on same day each week.
  • Tuition = $185

 

Family Dog Obedience II

  • Cues/skills addressed: refining of skills covered in Family Dog Manners with higher levels of distraction, duration and distance; new skills: front, finish, stand, targeting
  • Training record keeping methods are taught
  • Skills are taught on and off leash
  • APDT B.A. for Dogs or M.A. for Dogs awarded upon request (testing required)
  • Must have completed Family Dog Manners (or equivalent), or have trainer permission
  • 6 weeks long, meets for one hour on the same day each week
  • Tuition = $165

 

Advanced Family Dog Obedience 

  • DOGS ATTEND FIRST CLASS (No Orientation)
  • Cues/skills addressed: continuation of Family Dog Obedience II skills; new skills: back up, heeling
  • Refining of previously taught skills are addressed off-leash and with higher levels of distance, duration, and distraction.
  • Skills taught on and off leash
  • APDT K9 M.A. for Dogs or Ph.D. for Dogs awarded upon request (testing required)
  • Must have completed Family Dog Obedience II (or equivalent) and must have trainer permission
  • 5 weeks long, meets for one hour on same day each week
  • Tuition = $150

Therapy Dog Handler Course

  • We offer an extensive 12 week Therapy Dog training program, focusing on all aspects of therapy dog work, including: working around medical equipment, various levels of patient/client interactions, clinical practical visits (usually to a nursing home/rehab facility, helping you become a team working together with your dog. (the best part!)
  • The course also focuses on the various elements of the Therapy Dog Certification Exam. At the end of the course, participants may take the Therapy Dog Certification Exam of The Bright & Beautiful Therapy Dogs, Inc. which is independently administered.
  • Once qualified to become members of Allan’s Angels Therapy Dogs, a chapter The Bright and Beautiful Therapy Dogs, Inc., certified dogs will receive many benefits including primary accident and liability insurance within the US, and therapy dog equipment. Allan’s Angels is proudly sponsored in part by Bolton Veterinary Hospital.
  • Therapy Dog courses are usually offered at least once per year.
  • Completion of the course does not guarantee passing the test.
  • Requirements:
  • Dog must be at least 18 months of age
  • Both handler and dog must have completed a formal Basic Obedience/Family Dog course, taught using Positive Reinforcement methods
  • Completed an interview with the course instructor
  • Tuition = $300 (includes certification test fee)
  • This course is offered on a limited basis. The next class will begin Monday, Sept 14th, at 6:00 PM, continuing for the twelve weeks to follow.

COME FIDO, COME! (Recall class)

  • For dogs 6 months or older (your dog is never too old too train)
  • DOGS ATTEND FIRST CLASS (no orientation)
  • Teach your dog to come when you call them – the first time!!
  • No prior training is required
  • 4 weeks long, meets for one hour on same day each week
  • Tuition = $120

 

Tricks & Games

  • This is a FUN 4 week trick training/game playing course.
  • For dogs 4 months or older (your dog is never too old too train)
  • No prior training is required
  • DOGS ATTEND FIRST CLASS (no orientation)
  • 4 weeks long, meets for one hour on same day each week
  • Tuition = $120

 

C.L.A.S.S. (Canine Life and Social Skills)/ CGC (Canine Good Citizen)

  • For dogs age 6 months or older (your dog is never too old to train!
  • DOGS ATTEND FIRST CLASS (no orientation)
  • Teach your dog a series of “real life” activities
  • Completing a C.L.A.S.S. level is like earning an academic degree in life skills with your dog
  • APDT C.L.A.S.S. Degree for Dogs and/or AKC Canine Good Citizen awarded upon completion (testing required)
  • Must have completed family dog obedience (or equivalent), or have trainer permission (this is an Intermediate/Advanced course)
