How It All Began:

Allan Leventhal came from a family of veterinarians, with one uncle and three cousins in the profession.  That, combined with his love for animals, started him on his path to become a doctor in the field of animal medicine.  After serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II, Allan took advantage of the GI Bill, enrolling at Cornell University.  He made his way through both their pre-veterinary and veterinary programs to graduate first in his class and become Doctor Allan Leventhal in 1951.  Upon graduating, Dr. Leventhal went to work as an intern at the veterinary practices owned by his uncle and cousins.  On January 18, 1953, he borrowed one hundred dollars from his father-in-law and made a down payment on the property at 222 Boston Turnpike in Bolton.  The first Bolton Veterinary Hospital was born on April 7, 1953 in a converted 600 square foot two-stall horse barn in the back yard of his house.  The barn was heated by one small pot-bellied stove and served as the reception, examination, surgical, laboratory, treatment, and discharge areas of the new "hospital."

Dr. Leventhal was on call twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.  He was able to manage with the help of his beautiful wife Dottie, who functioned as his surgical nurse, kennel attendant, telephone operator, and receptionist, all the while having an infant on her hip and a three-year-old wrapped around one leg.  Having the practice fifty feet from their home was ideal in many respects.  A serious surgical case could be monitored hourly all through the night and monitoring a whelping bitch was "a short hop to the hospital and than back to bed."  However, having the practice so close to home also meant clients banging on the door during the middle of the night and on holidays.  During the twelve years that he lived next door to his practice, Dr. Leventhal rarely felt able to relax enough to change into pajamas before going to bed.  He said "...if I chanced it, invariably I'd have to redress to tend an emergency."

The continuous dedication and constant hard work of Dr. Leventhal and his wife paid off. By 1975 the "small" practice of Bolton Veterinary Hospital had grown enough that it required a new, much larger building.  Dr. Leventhal decided to build his new hospital directly behind the location of the original.  The "new" building, our current location, was actually constructed around one of Dr. Leventhal's favorite trees.  A grand old Sugar Maple (the second largest tree in Bolton !) stood in Dr. Leventhal's back yard and he refused to cut it down in order to make room for the new hospital.  Instead, he had the blueprints drawn up so that the tree could reside just out front of the new construction.  Once the plans were made and Dr. Leventhal was satisfied that his precious Sugar Maple would remain safe, construction of the 10,000 square foot clinic began.

It was around the same time that Dr. Leventhal allowed several of his associate veterinarians to buy into the practice and become official partners.  Three of the original partners, Dr. William Pomper, Dr. David Coley and Dr. Michael Tulman, are still here with us today!  Along with Dr. Leventhal, the new partners supervised the construction of the hospital, which was completed in 1976.  All of the existing equipment was moved from the original building into the new construction and the first Bolton Veterinary Hospital was razed to the ground.  The entire process of moving from one building to the other, including demolishing the first, took about two hours on one sunny afternoon in September.  The rest, as they say, is history.

Our practice has continued to grow in its current location.  In 1992 we officially began acting a weekend emergency clinic for other area hospitals and adopted the name East of the River Veterinary Emergency (EORVEC) during our covering hours.  Due to its overwhelming success, nine years later, in 2001, EORVEC began operating twenty-four hours a day and 365 days a year, covering the entire region.  In 2003, we here at Bolton Veterinary Hospital celebrated our fiftieth anniversary.  As of today, our professional staff consists of eighteen doctors (ten partners and eight associates) as well as one board certified surgeon.  Our lay staff now consists of around seventy-five well-trained individuals.  Despite our large size, we have done our best to maintain our personalized caring and friendly atmosphere.  We continuously strive to be accommodating both for our own clients as well as for those individuals coming from other practices for emergency care.  Please be assured that when your companion comes to our hospital for veterinary care, we will treat him or her as we would one of our own pets and we will work to provide the highest quality of care possible.  We heartily thank all of our valued clients for trusting us with the medical care of your closest companions and we look forward to serving you in the future.
