PHYSICAL  EXAMINATIONS

Why Schedule An Exam...

Every pet needs a full physical examination at least once a year, even if he or she appears completely healthy.  This examination will help to detect and prevent medical problems in your companion, as well as give you the opportunity to discuss any concerns and important issues with your veterinarian.  Delaying or skipping your pet's annual physical can lead to the advancement of major medical problems.  Remember that our pets age much more rapidly than we do and that one year of their lifetime is equal to about four to seven of ours.  Missing even one yearly exam on your apparently healthy pet can offer major consequences.

What to expect...

Veterinarians are trained to look for and recognize subtle symptoms which may indicate significant health problems.  They also have many diagnostic tools at their disposal, including radiographs (x-rays), bloodwork, ultrasonography and urinalysis, which can aid in the detection and prevention of disease.  At your pet's yearly visit, the doctor will provide the following:

  • A "hands-on" physical examination, which includes, but is not limited to, checking the ears, eyes, mouth, heart, lungs, lymphnodes, and abdomen.
  • A verbal health consultation, in which the doctor will speak to you regarding your pet's daily habits, address your questions and concerns, and offer suggestions on how to best keep your pet healthy and happy.  Don't be afraid to ask questions!  Bring a list with you if you are concerned that you might forget something.
  • Vaccinations, if they are due and prove to be necessary.
  • A fecal examination to detect any potential parasites.
  • Depending upon the age and health of your companion, the veterinarian may recommend additional diagnostics and/or preventative measures to consider.

When To Schedule An Exam...

Puppies & Kittens - Youngsters have to visit the vet more often than adult animals.  They require a series of vaccinations that are scheduled several weeks apart.  Your puppy or kitten will receive a physical examination at each of these visits to make sure that he or she is growing properly and that they are not exhibiting any abnormalities.  Visit our page on Youth Wellness for more information.

New Pets - Any time you adopt a new companion, regardless of their age, you should schedule for a complete physical examination right away.  This physical serves to ensure that your new pet is healthy and that he or she does not carry any diseases that are transmissible to you or your other pets.

Adults - Between the ages of one and seven years, your companion should be seen annually by a licensed veterinarian. Visit our page on Adult Wellness for more information.

Seniors - Over the age of seven, pets should receive physical examinations preferably every six months, or at the very least, once a year.  Any older animal with chronic health problems should be seen as often as the veterinarian recommends as necessary.  Visit our page on Senior Wellness for more information.

Traveling or Boarding - Airlines and other forms of mass transportation often require your pet to have a complete physical examination within a certain number of days from departure.  Be sure to contact the company that you are traveling with in order to make yourself aware of their guidelines.  Kennels and daycares also require special vaccinations which your companion may not have had in the past.  Make sure to plan ahead whenever possible so that you do not find yourself and your pet unprepared at the last minute.  Visit our Pet Travel page for more information.
